New Age Ads Take the Fun Out of Gifting

You know which new age ads I'm talking about? They pop up on completely unrelated sites, with pictures of 4 items I've recently searched on other sites.

This whole creepy targeted marketing phenomenon annoys me, for one reason more than any other: they are gift spoilers!  At least a handful of the gifts Squire and I have purchased for each other online have been outed by new age ads, before we ever got to unwrap them in the flesh.

Squire knew about his fishing pole, and his float tube. I knew about my sewing machine, and even more recently, I was all but 1% positive Squire was going to gift me a Polish pottery butter dish for our anniversary this year - which he did. (And I love it.) But seriously! Whatever happened to the days of being able to buy a gift for someone without all the internet fanfare on facebook, and every other site?

This post may come as a bit of a surprise to my husband. He knows better than anyone how hard I am to surprise. In fact, I'm a bit of a gift snooper. It's an art, really. Haha. Well, it was an art - before psychotic internet advertisers decided to take all the fun out of the guessing game too. Now all I have to do is log in and do a bit of web hopping a couple weeks before my birthday, Christmas, or our anniversary. It's only a few minutes before I am presented with a window into my husband's online shopping cart.

Looks like it's time to go back to buying gifts the old way - for me and the hubby - well, if we want to at least attempt to keep the surprise factor a factor that is. *Sigh.*

How do you deal with this issue? Or is this only an issue for me?
